Open Your Eyes—A Reflection to 'Inua Macho yako'
John 8:12 declares that Jesus is the Light of the world: “Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.’”
This verse reminds us of a common experience, like waking up in the dark and turning on a light, such as in the bathroom. The sudden brightness causes our eyes to squint, blink, or even close to shield against the intensity. Gradually, we adjust, opening our eyes fully to see clearly and awaken. This mirrors the spiritual journey of coming to know Christ after living in darkness.
When we first encounter Jesus, the Light of the world, we receive just enough illumination to recognize who He is, acknowledge our sinful state, repent, and accept the gift of salvation. However, walking in this light is a gradual process, not an instant transformation.
If God were to reveal the full brilliance of His glory to our spiritual eyes all at once, it would overwhelm us, much like bright light blinds physical eyes. Instead, He graciously unveils His truth incrementally, exposing our sinful habits, character flaws, desires, and thought patterns bit by bit. This allows time for the Light to penetrate our hearts, fostering change as we obediently open our spiritual eyes to His truth.
The song Inua Macho Yako (Lift Up Your Eyes) by St. Bernadette Kisii Cathedral echoes this call to embrace the Light. It urges us to lift our gaze toward Jesus, allowing His illuminating presence to guide us out of darkness. As we respond, we see more clearly, growing in faith and holiness. However, if we reject this Light—closing our spiritual eyes to avoid the conviction of our sins—we remain in darkness, stumbling through a world that bruises and batters us with its deceptions and temptations.
