It Is My Duty to Thank God—A Note From 'Yanipasa Kumshukuru Mungu'
There is something about gratitude that brings life into focus. Just as the song Yanipasa Kumshukuru Mungu reminds us, thanksgiving is not meant to be a seasonal act or tied only to a holiday—it is the rhythm of a believer’s heart.
Often, we fall into the habit of giving thanks occasionally, as though God’s goodness comes only once a year. But Scripture shows us a better way. Paul, one of the greatest leaders of the early church, opened nearly all his letters with thanksgiving. “We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you” (Colossians 1:3). For him, gratitude was not optional; it was essential.
Here are four reasons why it is our duty to thank God daily:
1. God Desires Our Gratitude
The Bible says, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18).
Our thanksgiving honors Him. The Father longs to be thanked for His providence, Jesus for His sacrifice, and the Spirit for His guidance. Gratitude delights God because it shows trust and recognition of His love. Complaints grieve His heart, but thanksgiving draws us closer to Him.
2. Everything We Have Comes from Him
Paul writes, “I always thank my God for you… for in Him you have been enriched in every way” (1 Corinthians 1:4-5). Every breath, every gift, every detail of who we are—comes from God. Even our salvation, the greatest gift of all, is not earned but freely given. No matter how much we give back, we can never outgive the Giver.
3. Gratitude Moves Us Forward
When the Israelites left Egypt, they soon turned to grumbling in the desert (Exodus 16:12). Their lack of gratitude blinded them to God’s promises, and they wandered longer than they should have. Entitlement holds us back, but thanksgiving opens the door to progress. Gratitude allows us to step into the life God has prepared for us.
4. Thankfulness Changes Our Perspective
When we thank God, our eyes shift from our struggles to His goodness. Our hearts are lifted, our joy deepens, and spiritual fruit begins to grow. Gratitude transforms us, shaping us more into the likeness of Christ.
Yanipasa Kumshukuru Mungu is more than a song—it is a call to live a life of continuous thanksgiving. True gratitude is not a one-day celebration but a daily posture of the heart. In every circumstance, whether in joy or trial, thanksgiving reminds us that God is good, faithful, and worthy of all praise.
So today and every day, let us say with conviction: It is my duty to thank the Lord.
